Drugs or unchecked mental illness. Both are dangerous by themselves, even more dangerous when it’s absurdly easy to obtain a gun.
What’s worse is that mental health still carries a very negative stigma in this country. So most people would rather try to “man up” and quietly deal with it than seek help. Also, mind you that mental health care is so crap sometimes that getting help doesn’t actually help and the help that is worth getting is expensive.

Sounds like 1-2 guys jumped him as he was reloading. This could have been much, much worse. Of course the gun arguments will continue, but this is probably one where the drug and/or mental health issues are #1.

It’s a combination of factors. Had mental healthcare been better/more accessible to this person it probably wouldn’t have happened. Had he not used drugs it probably wouldn’t have happened. Had he not had easy access to a firearm it wouldn’t have happened.
You don’t need to fix every factor entirely to significantly lower the amount of these deadly shootings that are apparently so rampant in the US.

Months before the man suspected of killing four people at a Tennessee Waffle House on Sunday became the target of a manhunt, authorities arrested him for trying to breach a barrier near the White House and later seized his guns.
Among the four weapons they took from Travis Reinking was the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle that police say he used in the Waffle House on Sunday. Two of the other weapons — a long gun and a handgun — are missing from Reinking’s apartment, and as of Sunday evening, Reinking was still at large.
Reinking, 29, was trying to meet President Trump when he attempted to cross a security barrier at the White House complex in July, federal authorities said. After an investigation by the FBI office in Springfield, Ill. — near where Reinking lived at the time — state and local officials confiscated Reinking’s guns and revoked his firearm license.
The guns, however, were later returned to Reinking’s father, who has acknowledged he gave them back to his son, officials said.
Yeah, I don’t know what the law allows, but dad should be going to jail...
